Les de Asis started out just by making a knife for himself; that butterfly knife took off after a local gun shop put in an order for 100 of them. The knives were a hit, and formed the basis of the company Les stated and named Bali-Song. That company grew into Pacific Cutlery Corp; but in the late 1980s, that corporation, which produced overseas, went into bankruptcy. But Les started anew, and launched Benchmade in 1988 with the approach to make everything in America. The new company’s name represents his approach to the high end knives he produces today – handmade tools crafted on a bench, yet with lower costs due to Benchmade’s manufacturing capabilities.
