Luna Sandals make their footwear in Seattle, Washington. According to company founder and owner Barefoot Ted McDonald, there’s more to success than profits, “…and I think that’s partly by being made in America. You’re getting back to the realization that you’re growing not only product, but people and processes and you don’t want to have to avert your eyes. Part of the success of doing business is not just making money. You better make money, or you better have energy entering into the system, and if you want to grow it and make it flower, it’s gonna need lots of energy. And if you want it to flower successfully so that it can flower again, you want to make damn well sure that what you’re making is something people want and that’s worth making again… more people need to get into the mode of not just greenwashing stuff or telling stories that make people feel good or, “Its made in America.” How about ‘It’s made in America, it’s made well, the people that make it can live in a world class city.’ They’re not going to get rich right now working for Luna Sandals but young people can get a job and develop themselves in a city that’s one of the most expensive ones in the country and have access to great outdoors, work in a company that they can see growing… to have done it differently than that way seems to me would have been a great loss for the roots of our company.”
